Where the Vocational Training focuses on breadth, using many techniques and approaches, the Master Training seeks for depth. You are now going to specialize in one area of sculpture. On top this, comes application and implementation, from all the previously learned skills, in your own personal imagery.


The Master Training is only accessible after an entrance examination. This is included for students Vocational Training together with the final evaluation of the 3rd year. Candidates from outside, can participate in this assessment upon request, where the input will be an equal technical level.


In Master I the reviews follow the same structure of the work meetings of the Vocational Training, in Master II this is only the half of it, where the exam commission decides together with the teachers which students are ready to graduate and which not.

Unlike elsewhere in mainstream art education, Master Training lasts not one but two years.

In both years you have seven elective courses (one semester, one half-day per week) and two Master Classes (several consecutive days per week). You can do these courses over a two year period, during which four courses and two Master Classes must be followed.

The theory program (art appreciation given by guest lecturer in Master I and vocational preparation in Master II) are year tied. There is also a program ‘Art in Assignment’
In addition to the curriculum, in Master II you can also make use of guidance by two teachers of your choice, plus there is the possibility of eight consultation hours given by teachers on the Vocational Training or artists outside the school.

Also, you have access to the optional range of lessons from the Academy, you can take part in excursions, projects etc.


You will get lessons in anatomical model drawing, relief, assembling,  ceramic techniques during the first semester. In the second semester you will specialize in model drawing, chopping and modelling.

Master Classes

There are also Master Classes from two to five consecutive days within a week. By Thom Puckey: spacial forms by idea, and by Harm van Weerden: mechanical stone carving.


At the beginning of the fifth year you hold a presentation for your group and the teachers of the fifth year. The presentation looks back on four years of training and clarifies with what kind of work you would like to graduate—including imagery. The presentations are judged by Eric Bos and Miranda van Gelderen

Art Appreciation

Art appreciation has the same approach as in the third year, but is given by a series of guest lecturers; each specialized in a particular area.

Professional Preparation

In a series of guest lectures and excursions you will be introduced to various ‘ins and outs’, of the profession, including presentation, operation of museums. CBK’s and galleries: the criteria of reviewers and the business aspects of being an artist.


If the Examination Board deems acceptable, you can graduate after the second year and receive the corresponding certificate.
By the considerations, not only the artistic level you have achieved is looked at, but also whether you have work of a sufficient quality, to take part in the graduation exhibition (this work is the final project).
If you are not ready, the study can be extended once.

Graduation Exhibition

The work from one’s own studio culminates in a graduation show. This is organized in June 2016 in the Martinikerk in Groningen. This exhibition should not be seen as an ending, rather the start of your artistry.
